As reported by Transport Topics, more carriers are using electronic logging on their trucks than in the past. According to a survey by Transport Capital Partners, 35% of carriers have electronic logging on their whole fleets, up from 25% last May. I am a small carrier with 40 company drivers and 6 owner operators and have been on e logs for more than three years. it is important that you know that as a driver and owner operator I used the slide rule log book and as an owner it was can we get the load done not does the driver have the hours. I now understand completely how wrong I was and how wrong this industry as a whole has been for far too many years. The best business decision I have ever made was the one to install e logs in all my trucks over three years ago. I know it my customers know it and most of all my drivers know it and are grateful for it.
if you are a small carrier reading this for the sake of your survival in the future you must not wait until the mandate you must find a way to do it now.
If you are a large carrier that is waiting for the mandate I want to say thanks because the rest of us who understand the value of e logs will be there to pick up the business you end up losing because you waited too long.
I also want to thank all of you that are dragging your feet because the longer you all wait the more drivers you are going to continue to lose. You see the driver word of mouth communication network is getting louder and louder and the word they are spreading is that the e logs are the best thing that has happened to this industry.
I will close my comments by telling you one of the other advantage that we gained with e logs is our ability to better understand our costs and why every hour counts and if we are not paid enough to do the load then we will not do.
Don’t wait you may not make the mandate.
Good luck to the backbone industry of the USA………….the trucking industry
